Dietary advice as per taste

In Diabetes diet plays an important role, diet is planned individually as per the demand of disease. So don’t become diet-phobic, manage it intelligently with the advice of the physician/Dietician. As each individual likes different taste so here are some suggestions for different groups are as follows-

Group 1- Patients crazy of sweet taste -

  • Sugar, Jagery, Honey & artificial sweeteners are the main source.
  • Direct sugar is restricted in diabetes so that craving for the same increases.
  • Do not withdraw sugar suddenly from diet, withdraw it gradually.
  • Replace direct sugar with jagery, honey in moderation.
  • Within 4-6 weeks craving of sugar will automatically decrease.
  • If craving still persists, consume artificial sweeteners as advised by your physician/dietician.
  • Fresh fruits with low sugar content can be consumed frequently.

Group 2-Patient crazy of sour/citrus taste-

  • Excess consumption of citrus & sour dietary articles like ,dry un-ripe mango powder, Tamarind, Lemon, Pomegranate seeds, citric acid (in artificially flavored soft drinks) can effect the digestion process as a result gastric irritation, heartburn & hyperacidity may create discomfort.
  • As per Ayurvedic theory, these increases digestive fire & produce burning sensation & excessive thirst.
  • Lemon & dry pomegranate seeds are better than other citrus articles; diabetic should prefer these to satisfy the taste craving.
  • Avoid Dry un-ripe mango powder, fresh un-ripe mango fruit, citric acid & other chemical based sour products.

Group 3-Patient crazy of salty taste-

  • Excess consumption of salty food articles is not good for diabetics.
  • Blood pressure may increase & oedema due to water retention may occur. Which may result in precipitation of early diabetic complications?
  • As per Ayurvedic theory cleansing mechanism of waste products are regulated by salt intake, but excess is harmful.
  • Rock salt is recommended as best in Ayurvedic texts, as it contains low sodium.
  • So replace normal salt with rock salt & also reduce intake.
  • Don’t take extra salt with salad & fruits, enjoy their natural taste, as most of the -vegetables contains natural salt.
  • You will become habitual of low sodium intake within 4-6weeks
